10 Reasons Why I Love Fandoms

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. This week’s topic is 10 Reasons Why I Love XXX. I chose to go with fandoms…

Wikipedia definition for a fandom is as follows: a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of empathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. Fans typically are interested in even minor details of the object(s) of their fandom and spend a significant portion of their time and energy involved with their interest, often as a part of a social network with particular practices (a fandom); this is what differentiates “fannish” (fandom-affiliated) fans from those with only a casual interest.

I love fandoms because:

It´s a Religion

Or a cult…

Inside Jokes

I have a mug at work with a picture of Dobby and a text: “Dobby is a free elf”. Just to remind myself that I should not work at a place I hate and also that I have no master… and that I was given a sock.

Fanfiction

You know that great sadness that comes when you finish a series… and then the great happiness when you discover the endless amounts of fics…

To Infinity …and Beyond

Obviously fandoms do not end with books. They are everywhere and in everything. Books, movies, games, tv shows, comics, sports, music just to mention a few.

It´s a Tribe

Nothing beats the feeling when you meet a fellow HP lover who is a Slytherin like you. You gain friends, you connect with people with similar likes, there are huge conventions too…

Mental Health

They give you a sense of belonging, characters to love and worship, coolest inside jokes, endless material… endless love

Escapism

There are times, like the current times, when you need a place to go but you cannot travel and have to follow social distancing guidelines. What better than getting into a new fandom and forgetting about the real world for a while?

So Much Trivia

Do you know what is the name of the dwelling place of Sauron? What is Victor Krum’s signature Quidditch move? In the 74th Hunger Games, what District is the last person to die in the bloodbath? Where does Sherlock Holmes live? Well I know and would beat you in a pub quiz or trivial pursuit.

Argumentation Skills

There is nothing quite like debating which Harry Potter house is the best. Or whether DC is better than Marvel…

Imagination

The more you read… the more you create, the more you learn about others´ imagination, the better yours will become

Thoughts? What are your favorite fandoms?

  1. Love this! It’s the unspoken thing that gets me – passed a man in a Slytherin scarf at the train station once when I was wearing my Hufflepuff one, and he just caught my eye and shook his head at me.

      1. I’m a Hufflepuff HP fan, and i would honestly be thrilled to see any harry potter fans irl, regardless of their house since i am a younger fangirl, and i only talk to people about the fandoms I’m in using the glorious internet.

  2. I don’t think I belong to any official fandoms, but I love connecting with people over shared love for the same books or series.
